The Lamp During the Day



There is something rarified about the Lamp during the day, in my mind at least. Maybe it's because I'm more accustomed to seeing it later on in the evenings but, during the day, as sunlight peeps through the frosted windows and the dusty skylights overhead, everything takes on an almost otherworldly quality. The mumbling old man who props up the bar looks like a figure from a painting by Hopper; faces dazzle, momentarily, as they get snatched by odd, little pools of light; suddenly, out the corner of your eye, you glimpse children who clearly don't even like alcohol; oh, and the floor looks dirtier...
